Abstract

Ancient Sanatan Indian knowledge and the search for truth have always been regarded as the highest human goals in Indian intellectual tradition and philosophy. In ancient India, the aim of education was not merely the acquisition of knowledge as preparation for worldly life and life after schooling, but was considered in terms of self-realization and liberation. At the end of the preamble of the New Education Policy, while referring to the objectives of the policy, it is stated that “the vision of the policy is that students should develop pride in being Indian not only in their thoughts, but also in their conduct, intellect, and actions, as well as in their knowledge, skills, values, and outlook.” Such an education should be committed to human rights, sustainable development, livelihood, and global welfare, so that students may truly become global citizens. Similarly, emphasis has been placed on the holistic development of students’ personalities and character building, and on adopting an integrated approach at all levels—across curriculum, teaching–learning processes, examinations and evaluation, research, and more. Along with this, the inclusion of Indian constitutional and ethical values, indigenous local languages, arts, and craftsmanship traditions, as well as the integration of Indian culture, sports, and arts, has been emphasized.
